- Approximately 80% of all cancer worldwide is theoretically
avoidable
- While some cancers are declining, others are increasing at an alarming rate
- Emerging and developed countries alike are working to beat back tobacco onslaught
- An indictment against tobacco companies worldwide will be unveiled; conference delegates will sign the document during the five-day meeting
SPEAKERS: Speakers include Michael J. Thun, M.D., an epidemiologist and vice president with the American Cancer Society; Miguel Garces, M.D., a cervical cancer expert in Guatemala; David Simpson, director of the International Agency for Tobacco and Health in England; Witold Zatonski, M.D., a Polish epidemiologist who has had success in passing legislation against tobacco in his country; and Pamphil Kweyuh, a Kenyan who has reported widely on the encroachment of foreign tobacco companies into Africa.
