2001/08/20 -The American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health agency, today presented its Volunteer Leadership Awards
to Sally West Brooks, RN, MA, of Palm Springs, California,
Secretary, the American Cancer Society, and Laura J. Hilderley, RN,
MS, of Warwick, Rhode Island. The Society presents this award in
recognition of long and exemplary service to the American Cancer Society. The
awards were presented by John R. Kelly, PhD, National Chairman of the American
Cancer Society at the Society’s annual meeting in Chicago.
In presenting her award, Dr. Kelly praised Ms. Brooks for her work with
advocacy and cancer control programs, especially breast cancer, and her
continuing dedication as an American Cancer Society volunteer.
Sally West Brooks is the founding president and Honorary Life Member of the
American Cancer Society’s Desert Palms Unit. She served the California Division
as Chair of the Board from 1992-93 and is also an Honorary Life Member of the
Division Board. At the National level, she serves on several committees,
including Income Development, Prevention, and Public Issues. Ms. Brooks serves
the State of California Department of Health Services as Chair of the Breast and
Cervical Cancer Advisory Council, and as Chair of the Cancer Research Advisory
Council.
Ms. Brooks holds a BS degree in nursing, a Public Health Nursing certificate,
and MA in psychology. She has received numerous awards from the Society and
other organizations, including the University of Illinois College of Nursing
Distinguished Alumna Award and the California Division St. George Medal and the
Capitol Dome Award.
Laura Hilderley was honored for the work in patient service and American Cancer Society governance, notably her commitment to volunteerism and values, and her ongoing work with the American Cancer Society.
Ms. Hilderley has been an American Cancer Society volunteer for many years, serving as both chairperson and president of the former Rhode Island Division. Currently, she is a delegate to the National Assembly.
Ms. Hilderley is an oncology nurse specialist, concentrating in radiation oncology in both the academic and private practice settings. She is a nationally known trainer and lecturer and is the author of numerous journal articles. She co-authored the landmark textbook, Nursing Care in Radiation Oncology. Her most recent book is a history of nursing, tentatively titled It Took Courage, Compassion and Curiosity. Recollections and Writings of Leaders in Cancer Nursing: 1890-1970. This is slated for release in 2001. She also serves on the editorial board of Cancer Practice, and Seminars in Oncology Nursing.
Ms. Hilderley has been the recipient of many awards. From the American Cancer Society, she has received the prestigious St. George Medal and the Distinguished Service Award. She received the very first Oncology Nurse of the Year Award for the Rhode Island Division. From the Oncology Nursing Society, she received the Roche National Distinguished Service Award and the first Varian Excellence in Radiation Oncology Nursing Award. In 1999, she was named Outstanding Alumna, University of Rhode Island College of Nursing.
In addition to her work with the American Cancer Society, Ms. Hilderley also serves as an appointed member of the Rhode Island Cancer Council, chairs the Rhode Island Tobacco Control Coalition Leadership Team and is an active member of her community. She is a deacon at the Greenwood Community Church, and is a member of the Board of Incorporaters of both The Providence Public Library and the Kent County Memorial Hospital.
