American Cancer Society Names UCLA Researcher Patricia Ganz, MD, Clinical Research Professor
2001/06/01 -Atlanta - July 01, 1999 . The American Cancer Society has awarded a Clinical Research Professorship to Patricia A. Ganz, MD, of the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Ganz, a recognized leader in the field of cancer prevention and control, is a professor in the Schools of Public Health and Medicine, and director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research. The award, announced at the Society's Board of Directors Meeting earlier this month in Portland, OR, is effective July 1, 1999.

Dr. Ganz's research focuses on people at high risk for cancer, older cancer patients, and cancer survivors. She is studying how to enhance quality of care and quality of life for people with cancer, while concentrating on many areas of cancer control, including prevention, early detection, and the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of care. She will receive $300,000 over the next five years, with the possibility of one five-year renewal, to conduct her research.

"The Clinical Research Professorship is the most prestigious research grant offered by the American Cancer Society, and the caliber of scientists receiving this award is unsurpassed," says John Stevens, MD, vice president of extramural grants for the American Cancer Society. "Dr. Ganz is a leader in the field of cancer prevention and control, and has focused the oncology professional community on care of the patient, not care of the cancer," he says. "Dr. Ganz's award marks the first time the American Cancer Society has awarded a Clinical Research Professorship in the area of health outcomes and cancer control."

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
